Rebuilt in 1848 and constructed of zelkova wood, the Niomon Gate is guarded by two Nio guardian statues, believed to have been made by disciples of the famed Japanese sculptor Unkei. The fierce glare of the Nio statues is said to prevent the entry of those with evil hearts.
