Okunoin Temple, Daibutsuden Hall

Okunoin, the old temple on the right, is formally known as Nyohodo Temple. The principle images enshrined within are statues of Shaka Nyorai and Taho Nyorai that Yamadera founder Jikaku Daishi was said to have carried with him during his religious training in China. The temple was rebuilt in 1872 and is also used as a place for copying sutras. Daibutsuden Hall, which can be found on the left of Okunoin, houses a 5-meter-high golden statue of Amida Nyorai, and memorial services for departed souls are carried out here daily.
