Hie Shrine
Hie Shrine is known for its Sanno Festival, held on May 17 each year. The large monument on the right side of the shrine was erected to commemorate an imperial visit to the region by Emperor Taisho and Empress Teimei. The enormous ginkgo tree in the background is the largest ginkgo tree in Yamagata city and has been designated a natural monument. Stone monuments inscribed with the poems of the famous poet Kyoshi Takahama and his son Toshio can be found under the tree, which is said to have been planted by Jikaku Daishi and is over 1000 years old.
